Keeping Entertained Outside
Writing Challenge #2: Fun at Camp
I love going to our camp in every season. There is no water on our property, but we have a lot of lawn space, a big campfire pit aside and of course the camp building itself. There is no Wi-Fi and cell service is minimal. It is a perfect place to escape from work. Of course, it could become very boring we let it. That is not what happens though.
There are a few activities/games that are my favorite things to do at camp to keep entertained.
Outdoor Family Games/Activities:
- Cornhole: Although I really enjoy playing horseshoes, not everyone is able to do so safely. Cornhole is an excellent substitute. It is fun when you have two- or more people to play. My mother-in-law is very good at this game and even has a t-shirt to exclaim her aptitude. "MeMa's the name and corn hole's my game!" It certainly fits. Grampa is also good at this game and I just hate that! (He's also a killer at horseshoes.) We like to have "tournaments" to pass the time.
- Ladder Ball: This is a fun game for two. I am not sure who invented this, but it is a pretty silly game. There is a ladder rack with three rungs on it. Each player has three sets of rubber balls attached to a rope on each end. You have to toss it, so the rope wraps around a rung of the ladder. The higher up it lands the more points you get. One thing to keep in mind with this is that it is attractive to dogs who like to play ball. We have another name for this game, but it is inappropriate to say here on this blog. You'll have to use your imagination.
- Campfires: Having a campfire going is a no-brainer for me. It doesn't matter what time of day or what season; I can sit outside all day next to a campfire. I just enjoy hanging out and visiting with whoever decides to come out to it. One thing I don't like to do at campfires though is make s'mores. People think I am crazy, but I don't like them. I like toasted marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers individually- just not together! Don't hate me for that.
- Treasure Hunting: Our camp is situated on an old farm site and there are a lot of nails and metal objects, along with the occasional bottle or jar. They are like little outcroppings of treasure. I enjoy walking around my favorite spots to see what I can find. It never gets old. One of these days, I am going to create an art piece with all that I have found.
So, there you have it. Some things I like to do when I am at camp. These, of course, are just a few of the outdoor activities, so down the road, I'll don you with some of my favorite ways to stave off boredom on rainy days indoors.
