Bring Back Cursive

I don't know about you, but until I started teaching- my handwriting was atrocious!

As soon as I started writing on the whiteboard, chalkboard, or even to make anchor charts, I realized that my handwriting was awful. Perhaps it was because I was getting so used to relying on computers, but it really made me upset to know that my handwriting was so bad.  And when I saw other teachers' ability...I was so embarrassed. My manuscript was poor enough, and then there was the cursive. Apparently, as I grew up, I combined the two into a mixture of both and it was all bad.

Then I noticed that my 5th & 6th grade students also had some bad handwriting habits and that apparently, cursive wasn't being taught much anymore by schools. Needless to say, I have started writing n cursive again regularly. When I write notes to others, I write in cursive. If I know my students can write cursive- I respond to them in cursive. I just hope the recipients of my notes can read them!

3 Reasons I think we should bring back cursive:

  1. It is easier than manuscript for students with fine motor skills because they don't have to pick up the pencil as much.
  2. Everyone needs a personalized signature. In my mind...a signature requires cursive.
  3. I don't want to have to worry that someone can't read what I write. After all, I am writing in English to English speaking individuals. So, it shouldn't be like a foreign language.
That's all I have to say about cursive for now.
