School's Out for Summer!

Another long school year is under my belt and summer is ahead of me. Boy, this was the longest year ever, but the last month went by like a flash. Now I can relax.

Easier said than done right? I don't care how clean my room is, or how well I did to ensure the kids have summer work packets in hand- shutting of my brain is not that easy. I am just supposed to close the door to my classroom and forget about it until August? I wish!

It takes me at least one week to get out of my own head about school. Try as I might, I am plagued by thoughts of what I can do differently next year or what topics I can add to the curriculum. Then I start reflecting about what I did well and what I didn't do well. Then I start looking around the house and realize that my house is a disaster! That is when I make every effort to forget about school (for a little bit) and take care of the other areas of my life that have been neglected.

It's kind of funny, and then not so much, but after regrouping and making a new plan, I find myself gearing up to enjoy the summertime off. It takes a bit of work to put fun on the priority list, but by golly- without weaving that into the schedule- all was for naught during the school year.

So, if you are like me, don't beat yourself up about not being able to shut off the old teacher brain, it's only natural. Just allow yourself a few days to stew in it and then you can move on.  Enjoy the sun and the family and drag some of your teacher/school friends along with you!

Happy Summer!
