Poetry

Yesterday mys students and I watched a live webinar with two young Poet Laureates that was hosted by Newsela. Although we could ask questions in the chat or submit them prior to the meeting, we could not interact with either Jessica Kim or Elizabeth Shvarts. That was O.K., because they were live and answering questions from the host.

I wasn't sure exactly how the kids would react, but they seemed to enjoy listening to both of these young women share their poems,  as well as some tips for those who are just starting. They used a fair amount of poetry "lingo," but that didn't bother the students. I think they were impressed that these teenagers have been published and were able to present online to others.

Poetry can be a tough subject, but having a variety of ways and people to introduce it might just be the ticket! I sent my kids home with a poem to write using the "Golden Shovel" technique. I can't wait to see what they have come up with. The next one just might be an abecedarian poem. (Yep- it is what you think it is.)

That's my two cents about teaching poetry today. Have fun, change up the scenery, and try some new techniques. If you have any ideas for your peers- please share!

Happy Poetry Month!
